Preconference Workshops

Preconference workshops require advance registration, and fees for these special extended-length workshops are in addition to the normal Summer Conference registration fees. All preconference

Adobe Intermediate Video Techniques

Explore how the unified interface and integrated workflow make it easier than ever to move projects and files between Adobe Creative Suite 3 Production Premium software components. This session will begin with Adobe Bridge and then move through a workflow including Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Premiere Pro®, and After Effects®. Other techniques that will be explored include moving animations between After Effects and Flash, working with sound files in Soundbooth™, and outputting to multiple media types using Encore®.

Hit the Ground Running:
Making the Most of Your Second Life
Looking for a richer, creative, social experience? A new play environment that encourages experimentation? Come explore the possibilities of creating a "second life." In this hands-on session, discover what virtual worlds are all about. Create your own avatar, acquire basic Second Life skills, find the best places to shop and meet others. This workshop will also examine, use and evaluate tools available for educators on the NMC Campus and elsewhere in Second Life to support teaching and learning. Discover how to create note cards, upload powerpoints, stream audio and video and record chats. Explore informal and formal learning spaces in this virtual world and learn what resources are available. Become involved with this vibrant community on the 3-D web!

Apple Final Cut Pro
This day-long class is a great opportunity to get started on Final Cut Pro. In a hands-on environment you'll learn how to navigate around the user interface, edit your video, trim and adjust your edit points, even set up transitions like dissolve and fades, as well as begin to work with your audio tracks. This class is ideal for those of you who are experiencing Final Cut Pro hands-on for the first time and for editors who are interested in improving their skills on this industry-standard tool.

Designing Games for Education
Modern-day videogames can provide the rich worlds and complex narratives required in education. Harnessing this potential calls for an understanding of the principles underlying successful games, and how to apply them. This workshop will provide faculty, developers, and administrators hands-on experience in designing and assessing an educational videogame. The methodology employed is both scalable and sustainable, and the knowledge gained can be put to use immediately.

Adobe Intermediate Design Techniques

Upgrade your skills with the latest features in Adobe® Creative Suite® 3 Design Premium software. This session will focus on integrating the applications to create the most effective workflow. Some of the techniques that this session will explore include opening native Photoshop® files in Illustrator®, importing them into InDesign® layouts or Flash® projects, and copying them into Dreamweaver®. Open Illustrator files in Photoshop and import them into InDesign layouts or Flash projects. Open and edit Adobe PDF files in Illustrator and Photoshop, and place them in InDesign layouts—even place one InDesign layout into another InDesign layout.

Virtual World Construction: Building a Project in Second Life

Second Life is a fascinating 3D virtual world, but how do we develop the many skills needed to create and control the environment? Come join the fun as we apply various building, texturing, animation, and scripting techniques to complete a project. Emphasis is on planning, design, skill development, integration, collaboration and modification of project characteristics. This session covers basic terminology through intermediate skills and includes free project resources.

Video Production for Education
Using After Effects and Flash, multimedia designers and developers can create memorable educational experiences that engage and inspire today's online learners. With these powerful tools, the video presentation has achieved a new level of sophistication. This workshop will examine how students learn and the benefits that video presentations may provide in increasing learning potential. The session will also examine the video production process from planning to shooting green screen video and synching video with animation in a Flash SWF file.
