INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CONSULTANT - CBE AND DMC

Degree and area of specialization:

B.A./B.S. in computer science, related field or relevant work experience is required.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Position requires 2 years experience with maintaining computer systems - both Windows and Macintosh platforms. The successful candidate must display attention to detail, good organization skills, a degree of initiative, ability to work collaboratively and excellent oral and written communication skills. The individual will work with faculty and staff end users as well as technical personnel and must possess excellent customer service skills.

Principal duties:

The Information Technology Consultant is responsible for the information technology needs of the Center for Biology Education (CBE) and the Digital Media Center (DMC) and will serve as liaison between the two units. Support for CBE includes consulting to the Institute for Cross-college Biology Education and development of technology applications for undergraduate instruction and advising. The individual will work collaboratively with CBE and DMC staff as well as faculty, staff and students from across campus under the direction of the CBE Associate Director in consultation with the DMC Director.

Specific duties include:

35% - Provide one on one and group consultation and support to faculty, staff and administrative personnel on long term technology applications and immediate software, hardware and network needs necessary for the development and implementation of academic, outreach and administrative activities. Educate CBE program directors, faculty partners and DMC patrons in effective technology applications and best practices, provide training in hardware, software and network applications, assist users with problems and produce training manuals and other informational materials, as needed. Play a leadership role in developing aspects of CBE projects that involve technology. Develop strategies and tools for gathering, analyzing and reporting data on programs and activities. Create documentation for hardware and software, network configuration, use policies and licence compliance. Support, maintain, troubleshoot and upgrade hardware and software for CBE and the DMC, including a Mac classroom, a PC/Mac lab and all other ancillary/support hardware. Work with DMC manager to research, develop and implement process and workflow improvements for DMC Staff and patrons.

35% - Provide expert advice to faculty, staff and students in use of web-based and multimedia tools for academic and outreach programs. Maintain the CBE web, backup and file servers. Develop, manage and upgrade instructional and informational content on the CBE web site. Create custom web applications using relevant software. Design and develop multimedia content for CBE publications and programs. Provide access to wikis and blogs to qualified staff members and program partners on and beyond campus. Update, maintain and upgrade DMC imaging solutions. Prepare and deploy software to DMC lab and classroom. Maintain large format poster printers, digital video hardware, CD/DVD duplication hardware, 3D scanners and other equipment. Organize and coordinate CBE and DMC equipment for loan programs. Track appointments in DMC database.

15% - Assess network and computer security and recommend policies and action on security issues. Conduct and monitor regular data backups and restore data if necessary. Manage CBE and DMC file servers. Ensure the security of all machines.

5% - Monitor and access emerging technology trends; maintain state-of-the-art expertise in applications relevant to the DMC and CBE programs. Assume responsibility for evaluating changing needs, advising faculty and staff on trends, acquiring new equipment/software and planning and implementing upgrades. Respond to the needs of faculty and staff in both the DMC Design Lab and Classroom.

5% - Participate in professional development including, but not limited to, acquiring new skills through training, and participating in campus-wide technology committees.

5% - Additional duties as assigned by CBE or the DMC.
