Connect@NMC: Faculty Development Models- Faculty Academy at University of Mary Washington

Faculty Academy is a long running faculty development activity at the University of Mary Washington (UMW), with this year's theme "Are We There Yet? Reflecting on 15 Years of Teaching and Learning Technologies". Each year, Faculty Academy brings together faculty and staff from the University of Mary Washington to share and celebrate the year’s efforts and accomplishments in the classroom, with teaching and learning technologies as the specific focus (or, one might say, catalyst) of the event. In their spirit of open collaboration, Faculty Academy is also open to educators from other regional institutions to attend, as well as an even larger audience who tune in via the web.

Cornell's CyberTower brings faculty into sharper focus

CyberTower, originally launched 10 years ago by Cornell's Adult University (CAU), uses video to share faculty expertise on the web. The site has undergone a transformation in site design and use of technology. "This is an ongoing experiment," said Ralph Janis, director emeritus of CAU, "to find ways to bring all parts of the university community closer to the faculty."

The site uses Flash video that is shown using a custom Flash player that has been programmed to include captions and showing the video in a full screen, without loss of quality. The site, http://www.CyberTower.cornell.edu includes "Study Rooms" that offer topics in everything from engineering to ornithology, immigration to astronomy, each led by one or more faculty members. The "Forum" section offers a monthly one-on-one interview by Glenn Altschuler, dean of the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions, with a faculty member.
