Getting Ready for the Symposium

Presentations for the NMC Symposium will happen at the NMC Conference Center, located on the NMC Campus in Second Life. 

What You Will Need to be Part of Second Life

If you do not have an account yet in Second Life, then we advise you well before the symposium (like now!) to go to the NMC's special account creation site to select your avatar, create an account, and then enter Second Life on NMC's Orientation Island.

Lev Gonick Keynote: From Digital Campus to Connected Community

Join Lev Gonick for his keynote presentation at the 2010 Symposium for the Future scheduled for Wednesday, October 20 at 9:00 am US Pacific Time.

Lev Gonick (aka Lev Book) is the technology visionary behind a landmark project that is bringing gigabit fiber connections to five under-served and impoverished Cleveland neighborhoods. Researchers at Case Western Reserve University believe broadband, along with training, computers and other broadband-enabled devices, may be a critical factor in improving these residents' lives. Lev's keynote presentation will explore how the University community, working together with 40 community partners in health care providers, public safety agencies, educational institutions and others, will impact people's lives at 1 Gbps.

The Symposium grows from the NMC’s Emerging Technologies Initiative, which seeks to answer the question of how to keep abreast of emerging technologies that may be important to our collective work as educators. At the core of this initiative is a focus on emerging technologies and the ways they can be applied in the service of teaching, learning, research, and creative inquiry. A major goal is to stimulate systematic thinking and discussion of the real challenges that face our world and our society, and in particular, how emerging technologies might be applied to solve them.

2010 NMC Symposium for the Future – Call for Proposals Is Open

Proposals for presentations for the 2010 NMC Symposium for the Future, a special 3-day, live online event to be held October 19 - 21, 2010, are being solicited through Sunday, September 15. 

The Symposium, the sixteenth in the NMC’s Series of Virtual Symposia, will explore actual and potential applications of technology that could impact issues of global importance over the next five years and beyond. The applicability of technology — whether established or emerging — to the social, environmental, and educational challenges we face today is a central theme of the Symposium. Projects that test the applicability of new ideas, research into new solutions for global problems, and demonstrations of cutting-edge tools are all part of this exploration of the future.
