Picturing the Story: Narrative Arts and the Stories They Tell
Every work of art has a story to tell, either through image and symbol, or through custom and ritual. These stories can explain the unexplainable, teach a life lesson, or celebrate our common human experiences. Picturing the Story uses works of art as a springboard for an interdisciplinary approach to culture, environment, language, and learning. Using selected narrative works of world art from the permanent collection of the Memorial Art Gallery, the Pachyderm presentation explores 7 works of art across many cultures and time periods, dating as early as 1500 BCE.
The stories behind the objects are interpreted in a variety of ways and through many different digital media. You can read or listen to the story or legend told orally, or you can watch an ASL interpreter sign the story. Historical information about each culture and extensive classroom materials for K-12 educators are also available through the site.

E.M. Barron Agate Collection
This Pachyderm presentation displays beautiful images of the Texas Natural Science Center's Barron Agate Collection. This collection of Mexican agates was generously donated to The University of Texas by Colonel E.M. Barron, and contains some of the best specimens of Mexican agates available.
The Pachyderm presentation allows us to inform viewers about the geologic history and formation of agates, what gives them their unique colors and patterns, and also the many different types of agates that exist.

Marcus Collection Catalogue

As a result of participation in the Edward and Betty Marcus Digital Education Project for Texas Art Museums, museum educators, curators, and directors have successfully integrated digital media into their education and outreach activities in ways that extend their efforts to a wider audience. A community of digital storytellers has grown up across the state that can help to sustain the momentum of the work. Furthermore, this collection of high-quality materials has been created that can be used to address important needs related to visual arts education.

2008 Pachyderm Conference to Be Held in San Antonio, Texas
Posted August 2nd, 2008 by NMCThe 2008 Pachyderm Conference will take place September 22-24, 2008, in San Antonio, Texas. This is the third annual Pachyderm Conference.
The focus of the conference is to bring together Pachyderm authors, developers, and others in an ongoing conversation about how to communicate effectively with digital media. The conference provides a forum for beginners to learn from established experts, and for those with more advanced skills to exchange ideas and gather inspiration from their peers.
The theme of this year’s conference is the power of story. Highlights will include final details about the next release of Pachyderm, as well as a special showcase of presentations that demonstrate the deep connection between story and audience.

NMC Announces Launch of Pachyderm Services
Posted February 4th, 2008 by Rachel SmithToday the New Media Consortium (NMC) announced the launch of Pachyderm Services, a new suite of services which will provide colleges and universities, museums, schools and other learning-focused organizations a new suite of services supporting low-cost web-based multimedia authoring.
The program offers two categories of services — hosted accounts for teachers, students, museum professionals and other individuals; and hosted server solutions for institutions and departments. The new unit will provide a variety of ways for individuals and institutions to have hosted Pachyderm authoring accounts on a yearly subscription basis designed to match any budget.

Integrating the Arts: Phase Two of a Multi-Year, Multilayer Pachyderm Project

This presentation will demonstrate and discuss the second phase of a three-year, large-scale Pachyderm project called Integrating the Arts: Mummies, Manuscripts and Madonnas . This project, being produced for the Walters Art Museum by Sandbox Studios, is based on an interdisciplinary approach for K-12 teachers and students to a select number of ancient, medieval and Renaissance works of art in the Walter’s collection.
