San Francisco Summit of Thought
Leaders
In September 2002, fifteen leading practitioners and thought leaders
in the world of learning object development from the U.S., Canada,
and Australia gathered in San Francisco for two days of intense
dialog and discussions. They represented the diverse sectors of
business, higher education, and government, but came together for
the common purpose of identifying the systemic challenges inhibiting
the realization of a functional economy in learning objects.

Webcast: Building out the Learning
Object Economy
In this webcast, initially broadcast on April 18, 2003, NMC CEO Larry
Johnson discusses a variety of models of learning objects and their
relationships to other types of content objects. The core of the 30
minute webcast is a description of an economic model applicable to
learning objects, which Johnson uses to frame a discussion of challenges
impeding broad use and adoption of such approaches.

Online Conference on Learning Objects
NMC’s Online Conference on Learning Objects was held
October 14-17, 2003. The themewas the application of learning objects
and learning object theory to educational contexts, specifically
within higher education. The program included sessions on:

- Best Practices & Practical Lessons
- Successful Projects & Real-Life Examples
- Trends and Issues
The conference featured 12 30-minute sessions, each with a "live/interactive"
component, a "presentation-on-demand" component, and a
vibrant threaded discussion that will expand on and illuminate the
